Comic book readers who’d thrilled to the first battle of Daredevil versus The Claw in Silver Streak Comics #7 needed to exercise patience; the rematch would be two months in coming. But when Silver Streak Comics #8 finally hit the newsstands, kids (of all ages) snapped copies up with eager anticipation.
As part of Bonus Battle October, the Big Blog o’Fun today presents that second confrontation between these two iconic Golden Age characters. Before we get to the tale, though, I’d like to point out a common misconception about 1940′s comic books. Due in no small measure to Marvel Comics’ repeated (and false) claim that they “pioneered” multi-issue story arcs in the 1960′s, many comic readers believe that every pre-Silver Age comic was a one-shot which bore little direct relation to stories which appeared in previous issues. This is entirely false. In the story featured in our previous post we saw references to the prior battles between The Hangman and both The Executioner and Captain Swastika. I intend at some future point to run the multi-issue Blackhawk saga which revolves around the death of André (as presented in early issues of Military Comics).
I’ll grant you that “series” stories which appeared in comics of the Golden Age were not bound as tightly as those in comics today; Marvel did pioneer the process of taking continuity to lengthy, tedious, “soap operatic” extremes, which eventually culminated in “writing for the trades” today: making sure that that a single story runs five to seven issues so that its component parts can be collected into a $20 trade paperback which can be billed as a “graphic novel”.
Regardless of what present-day comic publishers would have you believe, 1940′s comics did display some measure of continuity, the story in today’s post being a case in point. After the (really cool) half-page splash panel in Silver Streak Comics #8, the next three panels directly reference the events depicted in the previous issue (and the fourth panel refers to it indirectly).
Without further preamble, let’s continue Bonus Battle October with the second struggle between The Master of Courage and The World’s Most Fantastic Criminal (as each had been billed in prior issues of Silver Streak). Here’s Part Two of “Daredevil Battles The Claw”!
