I guess you’ve probably heard all the hoo-hah about a new survey (by that Evil Empire “news” network) which says that something like 2/3rds of Americans surveyed favor removing the U.S. flag from schools to “avoid trouble” (supposedly caused by somehow offending a variety of multicultural students). If that survey is true, it means that you and I are surrounded by idiots. And being as I’ve made it something of my life’s work to go as far out of my way as is necessary to piss off idiots whenever and wherever possible, I’ve decided to jump the gun and present some Villains and Vigilantes characters that I was saving for later.

So for the next several posts, get ready to meet those patriotic heroes and heroines of yesteryear, those Axis-bashing fighting furies of star-spangled justice: THE LIBERTY LEAGUE!

JACK VICTORY

Jack Victory

John Victor Ricci was born in New York City in 1916, the son of Italian immigrants. Jack’s father was passionately patriotic toward his newly-adopted country, forbidding Italian to be spoken in his home (“English! We are Americans now!”) and becoming an avid baseball fanatic. The Riccis moved from New York to Silver City when Jack was still a small child. Jack grew up reading the exploits of costumed pulp magazine heroes and dreaming of a life of adventure.

During the Great Depression, Jack joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (the “CCC”). During construction of a community park a CCC truck’s tailgate broke and several drums of various chemicals rolled free and crashed into a stone wall, breaking open and dousing young Jack with their contents. Jack was rushed to a hospital and hovered near death for two days. Later, while convalescing at home, Jack discovered that he’d been somehow altered by the chemical brew: Jack was harder to hurt, had developed freakishly excellent aim, and had acquired the ability to fly. Inspired by the pulp characters he loved, Jack decided to create a costume for himself and use his new abilities to help others in need. With the blessings of his parents, he began to lead a dual life as both Jack Ricci and the first superpowered “mystery man” Jack Victory.

During the late 1930’s, Jack worked to thwart the plans of gangsters, fifth columnists, agents, and saboteurs who were attacking Silver City based defense industries in an effort to cripple potential American support for China and other nations under the threat of fascist invasion or overthrow. When the U.S. became involved in the war in 1941, Jack was given a special draft deferment to remain on the home front and continue his battle against Bund and Japanese saboteurs. He was joined in these efforts by other costumed adventurers who became internationally famous as the Liberty League. Although they were never directly involved in front line combat (rumored to be because of  some Nazi-held mystical device of power which prevented them from crossing an Axis battleline), the League expanded its operations to areas beyond Silver City as the war progressed, battling creations of evil Nazi super-science, Japanese robots, and supervillain menaces of all varieties.

Jack Victory mysteriously vanished in mid-1945. His whereabouts and fate were unknown until 2010 when the members of Junior Justice discovered Victory in a subterranean vault, being held in a state of suspended animation in some sort of cryogenic freeze. The exact circumstances of his decades-long imprisonment have yet to be revealed.
