Continuing our series on Silver City’s costumed heroes of the Second World War, we’re pleased to present the fastest man in America…

JET JOHNSON

"Jet" Johnson

Augustus Johnson was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi in 1911. Although an excellent scholar, young Augie’s passion in life was baseball, thus no one was surprised when he became a professional player in the new American Negro League in 1929. As center fielder for the short-lived Yazoo City Road Kings in the mid-1930’s, Augie led the league in stolen bases in three consecutive seasons, earning the sobriquet “Jet” for his blinding speed.

As Jet stood in the outfield during a 1938 regular season game in Memphis TN, a freak thunderhead formed directly over the park. Before the players could come in off the field, Jet was struck by a bolt of lightning. Jet survived and discovered that he had acquired heightened speed, reflexes, and endurance in the accident. In his next game for the Road Kings he not only beat out a bunt, he rounded the bases before the pitcher had a glove on the ball. Jet was banned from playing professional baseball as a result of his new-found extrahuman abilities.

Bitter over his expulsion from the baseball league and unsure of his future, Jet saw a newspaper article about a new costumed hero based in Silver City. Jet caught the next train to Maryland and soon met Jack Victory; the pair became fast friends, bonding not just because of their superhuman powers but also because of a shared love of baseball (which Jack inherited from his father). Together they founded the Liberty League. Jet Johnson became one of just two members with a “public” identity; Jet didn’t wear a mask.

The League remained active even after Jack Victory’s disappearance and the end of the Second World War. While on a mission in 1946 most of the Liberty League (including Jet Johnson) vanished mysteriously. Their ultimate fate remains unknown.
