When computer programmer Ronald Fredericks left his home to drive downtown with his wife and infant daughter, he had no idea that his life was about to be altered forever…

Fredericks was running some typical Saturday errands, one of which was to take him downtown to a small computer shop where a software package he’d ordered had finally arrived. As he drove with his family down one of the city’s main streets, Fredericks was caught in a classic “wrong place at the wrong time” scenario. Two rival street gangs opened up on each other with automatic weapons fire from opposite sides of the street; Fredericks’ car was caught in the crossfire. His wife and daughter were killed instantly by the bullets and tracers, while Fredericks was himself hit in the throat. One of the incendiary rounds hit the car’s fuel tank, causing the car to explode in a massive fireball.

Fredericks miraculously survived the attack but was horribly scarrred by the explosion. His vocal chords were nearly destroyed by the gunshot to his throat, reducing his voice to a low rasp. His deep scars went beyond the physical to the psychological; Fredericks became obsessed with fighting crime in all its forms, but with a special emphasis on street gang activity, swearing an oath to do everything in his power to prevent anyone else from having a life-shattering experience like his own.

Donning black apparel (including a trench coat and hood), Fredericks took the name Revenant and began his one-man war on crime.

REVENANT

Revenant’s skull-like face is not a mask; instead, it’s the result of his scarring by the explosion. Revenant has trained himself both physically and mentally, and had become the master of a number of weapons and gadgets which he uses in his vigilante activities.

Revenant is perhaps the last holdover from the 1990’s “street vigilante” era of the anti-hero. Violent and ruthless to his foes, Revenant is not above dangling a wrongdoer upside down from a skyscraper’s ledge to extract information or “roughing up” a perpetrator a little more than is strictly necessary.

While his fellow Justice Federation members may not approve of Revenant’s methods, they’re also savvy enough to recognize the fact that harsh measures are sometimes necessary in a harsh world, so they’re inclined to “look the other way” as long as Revenant doesn’t cross the moral line between “vigilantism” and “murder”. While Revenant isn’t especially close with any of his JF teammates, he’s formed something of an alliance with Deep Freeze and Junior Justice. While Deep Freeze actively discourages his sons from emulating Revenant’s methods, he’s also impressed upon them the importance of not judging Revenant too harshly – anyone’s life can be transformed in an instant, as was Revenant’s, by the cruel vagaries of fate.
