When a secret society of mystics imbued an ornate vase with a portion of their power, they had no way to know with whom that power would eventually reside – only that the higher being the mystics served would ensure that the owner would be worthy to wield it…

Sam Lopez thought he was just an ordinary teenager (a fair bit brighter than most, but otherwise basically a typical teen). One day when he was knocking around in an antique store, killing time, he spotted an interesting old vase, ornately carved. He reached to touch the vase and immediately felt like an electric shock had passed through him. Sam wasn’t sure what had happened, but he knew that he felt…different.

That night Sam had a strange dream in which shadowy indistinct forms spoke to him and told him what he had experienced. The shadows were the astral forms of a secret mystic society, a group which was hunted down and destroyed by the forces of evil. As their last earthly act, the mystics had created a sort of “battery” to hold the major portion of their power, then placed wards on the vase-shaped device to ensure that none but a worthy soul could receive and wield these strange energies. Though the vase was handled for decades by a wide assortment of people, none had received the mystics’ stored power until Sam touched the vase.

By an odd coincidence Sam’s twin brother Cody also became the recipient of strange metahuman powers around the same time. The brothers were determined to use their abilities to help people rather than for personal gain, and decided to start by cleaning up Silver City’s illegal drug trade as costumed heroes: Sam in the guise of The Wraith and Cody as the Lightning Lama. After joining forces with their father, retired 1980’s metahuman hero Deep Freeze, and a metahuman schoolmate (Nightfang), the quartet battled crime in Silver City for three years as Junior Justice, an adjunct of the world-famous Justice Federation.

The twins have since gone off to college and have curtailed their superheroic activities while they pursue their degrees. On the rare occasions that they do venture forth in costume, they’re now known as the TNT Twins.

Sam’s powers tended to vary and fluctuate for the first couple of years he was active as The Wraith, but seem to have finally settled into their present form. The stats given below are for The Wraith at the time he left home to pursue a college education.
